Motorcycle police officers are helping make sure that vehicles of Budapest transport company BKV are not held up by drivers breaking traffic regulations, Budapest Police have announced.

According to Népszabadság, the idea is not new, as it had been announced on several occasions in the past that police would step up against motorists driving in bus lanes and parking on tram tracks. However, despite cameras watching over bus lanes since 2002 and police fining drivers who break regulations, the problem remains. BKV has asked for help from police last year and signed an co-operation agreement with the authorities in January.

Motorcycle police officers are focusing their attention on the most problematic public transport routes in the city: trams 17, 30 and 24, trolley buses 73 and 76 and buses 15 and 105. They are also checking stops, such as along trolley routes 70 and 78, bus routes 7, 73, 233E and 239, as well the vicinity of Kálvin tér and bus lanes on Fő utca, Budaörsi út, Szilágyi Erzsébet fasor, Vágány utca and Kerepesi út.
