Police take down fence around Budapest's Kossuth tér
National Police chief László Bene announced on MTV Sunday that police would dismantle the fence around Kossuth tér by Monday morning. Other police officers speaking on condition of anonymity told Magyar Hírlap that the decision to dismantle the metal barriers had been made because the public security situation was deemed good, but they added that the fence will be put back up if necessary.
Police took several viewpoints into account when analyzing risks, such as the conduct over the holiday weekend of those protesters who had camped on Kossuth tér last autumn.
Budapest Police spokesman Tibor Jármy said police had acknowledged the announcement by one such group, the Hungarian National Committee 2006, to stage demonstrations in the car park outside Parliament between 5.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. every day from Tuesday until April 30. Committee spokesman László Gonda said no tents will be set up, no drinks will be allowed, portable toilets will be installed, protesters will stay off the grass and the anti-government demonstration will remain peaceful.
