Police seal Kossuth Lajos tér off from protesters
Police continued to block Kossuth tér in front of Parliament yesterday. A few hundred demonstrators wanted to return to their tents on the square but were obstructed and outnumbered by the police.
Practically no demonstration prevailed on the square after rain began to fall in the evening. "We have classified Kossuth tér as an operation area, thus no demonstrations can be held there," said Budapest Police Chief Péter Gergényi.
The police put an end to the 24-hour demonstration against the government after security searches uncovered several objects potentially dangerous to the public, including socks filled with petrol-soaked charcoal. "This alone gives a legal basis on which to prohibit the demonstration," Gergényi added.
In all, 131 people were detained: 32 for offensive conduct; 15 for aggression towards police officers; and 84 for legal violations. In total 57 were held in custody.
