Police launch three-day, nationwide traffic clampdown
Police will hold increased checks on Hungary's roads on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to filter irregular drivers, especially those drunk or under the influence of illegal drugs, reports hirszerzo.hu.
Police will check motorists on highways, main routes, minor routes as well as within and outside inhabited areas. The increased checks are part of a raid organized by the European traffic police network TISPOL.
While officers will mainly watch for drivers who drank or used drugs, they will also enforce traffic regulations (KRESZ) and check the vehicle and its papers.
In Hungary, 13% to 14% of road accidents were caused by drunk drivers until a zero tolerance policy was introduced in January, after which this figure decreased to around 10%. The goal is keeping this level below 10% and approaching 5%, said László Ruszó, an associate of the traffic department of the National Police.
