Police issue noon ultimatum to Kossuth tér protesters

Police yesterday gave Kossuth tér campaigners until midday today to accept their conditions for demonstrations on October 23 after talks broke down between the activists' representatives and police officials. Police say the tent must go and that only 500 people can demonstrate during commemorations.

Tamás Molnár, one of the spokesmen for National Committee 2006, and National Police spokesman László Garamvölgyi gave differing assessments of the outcome of the talks. Garamvölgyi said agreement could not be reached on how many people could demonstrate in the square on October 23 and on whether the tents should be taken apart.

However Molnár claimed that the health tents and marquee are needed, as the latter serves as a place to warm up and as temporary accommodation.

Ferdinánd Laczner, who Népszabadság calls "the square's self-appointed commander in chief," said "we are willing to lose blood if police resort to force to remove us."
