Police crackdown on boaters in Hungary
The Hungarian police have stepped up patrols on the Danube river, writes mti.hu. Zoltán Tóth, head of the Danube Water Police (Dunai Vízirendészeti Rendőrkapitányság, said that the aim of the enforcement push, which will last until the end of next week, is to local stolen boats, check safety equipment and crack down on those operating craft while intoxicated.
Tóth said the checks will take place along 417 kilometers of the Danube - or 700 kilometers including tributaries - and a policy of "zero tolerance" will be exercised against those found "driving" drunk, as on the country's roads.
Hungary's motorways are also the focus of the campaign, as police have received information that motorboats stolen in France, the Netherlands and Belgium are being transported through Hungary on their route to other countries.
The action is part of a larger campaign being undertaken by the 11 member countries of the European water police organization AQUAPOL, which Hungary joined in 2005.
