Pécs, Eger honored in "liveable communities" competition
The city of Pecs in southern Hungary finished second in a global competition among liveable communities (LivCom Awards) in Dongguan, China, on Monday, a spokesman for Pecs told MTI.
Pecs, which will be one of the three European capitals of culture, trailed only Broadland, England, in the category of cities with 75,000 to 225,000 residents, Gyorgy Panics said.
North Hungarian Eger failed to make it to the top three in the category of cities with 20,000 to 75,000 inhabitants but got a bronze plaque for its high-quality presentation.
The finals were held from November 6 to 10 with 50 cities in the running. They competed in the categories of landscape, heritage, environmentally sensitive practices, community sustainability, healthy lifestyles and planning for the future.
LiveCom Awards are granted each year in five categories based on the size of the communities, and their objective is to improve the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of "liveable communities."
The LivCom Awards were launched in 1997 and are endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme.
