Passengers sent off Budapest-Vienna train by inspector

An Austrian ticket inspector, claiming safety reasons, made 150 standing passengers leave the Budapest-Vienna Liszt Ferenc EuroCity train at the Austrian-Hungarian border on Saturday, writes hirszerzo.hu.

The ticket inspector said he could not let the overcrowded train enter Austria as the number of standing passengers endangered their safety and comfort. The Austrian railway company ÖBB defends the inspector's decision, claiming that the train should not have departed from Budapest with that many passengers at all. Hungarian railway company MÁV states that this was not the first case that a train carried that many passengers, and there are no international definitions of "overcrowding." MÁV expects a better explanation for the incident.

Both the liberal Austrian daily Der Standard and the conservative journal Die Presse pointed out that ÖBB acted irresponsibly and without respecting the rights of passengers.
