Parking fees set to be tied to BKV ticket prices
A new proposal has been tabled that will tie the hourly rate for parking to single tickets on Budapest public transport from March, writes business daily Napi Gazdaság. This will mean a dramatic rise in charges in those zones where parking currently costs just Ft 115 and Ft 150, although zoning will still exist. A single ticket on BKV currently costs Ft 290 (€1.05).
According to Zoltán Gyarmati, managing director of Parking Kft., the company charged with developing the city's new pricing strategy, the price increase reflects the fact that charges have decreased 21% in real terms since 2001.
The price of an hour's parking will be most expensive in the restricted-access Castle District, where charges will be set at double the cost of a single ticket. Other zones will also be simplified and structured based on their proximity to the city center.
The strategy is also focused on simplifying the current system in which three companies issue tickets and collect fines while prices are set individually by local districts. In addition, the number of resident permits will be reduced - currently more are handed out than there are parking spaces - and the issue of disabled permits will be tightened.
