Paid parking to be introduced in Újpest town center
Paid parking will be introduced in the northern part of Pest, Újpest, when development of the center of the district, the market hall and its environs begins in the fall, reports daily Népszabadság. District IV Mayor Tamás Derce told the paper that the new parking system will not be managed by any of the parking companies currently operating in Budapest - particularly Centrum Parkoló Kft. "These are very bad brands, and they only have themselves to blame for their reputation," he said, adding that there was agreement that the task would be handled by a company owned by the local government.
The increasing number of parked cars in the area have been a problem for some time with the majority of vehicles belonging to commuters.
Plans are expected to be completed within two weeks. The paid zone will include the streets around the town hall, but its exact boundaries are still under discussion. The new regulations will also be temporary, as the development of the neighborhood will include the building of a 300 capacity underground garage, which will require a rethink of local traffic regulations. A new paid parking lot is also being built on a large, empty plot nearby.
