One dead, 28 injured in tourist bus accident in Hungary
A middle-aged woman was killed and eleven others suffered severe injuries when a Polish bus crashed on route 86 at Beled, western Hungary. Police believe that the Polish driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
The driver later admitted that he was to blame for the accident, as he had felt very tired, although he took turns with a fellow driver every four hours and rested as specified. The bus was carrying 38 passengers home from a pilgrimage to a Catholic site in Medjugorje, Bosnia.
Road accident statistics dramatically deteriorated in the first three months of the year, as the number of deaths rose by 33%. In addition, 16% more personal injuries were registered in road accidents than in the same period of last year. The situation improved somewhat by late May, but the National Police plan to conduct checks on busier stretches of road until the end of the year.
