NW Hungary village wins gold in Entente Florale Europe
The picturesque village of Lipot, situated on a Danube island in north-western Hungary, has won a gold medal in this year's Entente Florale Europe, otherwise known as the European competition for towns and villages in bloom, Hungary's tourism office told MTI on Friday.
The jury plumped for Lipot after studying its vegetation, landscape, tidiness and attractiveness for visitors, as well as its environmentally focused education and village development plans, the office said.
A village with 694 inhabitants and 243 houses, Lipot has been long preparing for the competition. Only two other villages have won gold medals: Guyencourt-Saulcourt in France and Carrick in Ireland.
Entente Florale is the oldest and most successful environment beautifying contest launched in 1975. In 1990 Hungary was the first central European country to take part.
