Number of registered homeless in Hungary tops 7,000
The number of Hungary's registered homeless rose by 843 to over 7,000 last year according to data compiled on a voluntary basis published on Thursday.
The data showed that Budapest records more homeless than the provinces, but most of these people stay in shelters and receive homeless services, while Hungary's other major cities - Pecs (S), Debrecen (E), Gyor (NW) and Szekesfehervar (C) - registered a rising number of rough sleepers. The highest ratio of homeless in proportion to the population was in Esztergom (N) and Miskolc (NE).
Peter Gyori, chairman of the Hungarian Shelter Foundation said finding work is much more difficult in the provinces. He added that the effects of the economic crisis have shown up a rise in the number of people who report recently losing a job or their home, which are the primary reasons for becoming homeless.
Hungary's homeless population is estimated at 24,000-25,000.
