The number of HIV-infected people in Hungary has reached well over 1,800, the daily Nepszava said on Wednesday, World AIDS Day.

The figure, however, does not include the estimated hundreds who are unaware of their condition, the paper said, citing experts.

The HIV infection rate started to greatly increase this year and the number on new registered cases, many of them heterosexual, may exceed 200 by the end of 2010, said the paper. The increase, however, may have been registered due to more frequent participation in screenings, the paper added.

Since 1985, a total of 1,877 people with HIV have been registered in Hungary, one quarter of them foreign nationals, the paper said.
