Renowned Hungarian actor Péter Blaskó has refused to accept the prestigious Kossuth Prize, saying he did not want to shake hands with Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány during the award-giving ceremony.

The Kossuth Prize is the country's highest award for the arts, and is given out each year on March 15th, the anniversary of the 1848 uprising against Austrian rule.

In a letter addressed to the premier in Friday's edition of conservative daily Magyar Nemzet, Blaskó accused the current Socialist-Liberal government of "destroying" Hungary.

In his letter, Blaskó said he was glad and grateful for being considered for the award, but said that if he had shaken hands with Gyurcsány's, "I could not stroke the face of my children or the hand of my wife anymore."

A government spokesperson said that Blaskó's gesture was a snub of the country, as the prize "belongs" to the Hungarian state and not the government of the day.
