No convictions for police brutality yet

Investigations were launched in more than 170 cases regarding police excesses after the autumn riots but no single policeman suspected of police brutality has been identified. Népszava says it is a fact that no riot cop has given himself up voluntarily, and in the absence of police badges it is practically impossible to identify them.

Some unit commanders appear to be sabotaging the procedures, Népszava says, but the prosecutor's office says it is making headway, albeit slowly.

Police spokesman László Garamvölgyi said commanders are co-operating with prosecutors in every way possible. They would commit a crime if they deliberately hindered the investigation, he noted.

Zoltán Borbély, spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office, told Népszava that there is no tension between the office and the police.
