New stretch of M0 opened
Budapest Mayor Gábor Demszky and Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony of the new motorway on September 16.
A total of 26.5-kilometer-long new stretch of the M0 motorway ring, which is to relieve Budapest of some of the traffic, was ceremonially opened by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány on Tuesday, reports 168ora.hu. New motorway sections will open on the last two Tuesdays of this month as well, vg.hu adds.
The three sections of M0 opened yesterday – between Routes 4 and 31, Route 3 and M3 and Routes 31 and 3 - cost Ft 49 billion (€200 million). The new stretch is part of the eastern section of the motorway, being built with an EU cohesion fund support of €285 million. Currently, the bypass is 80 kilometers long. A 12.4-kilometer connecting road between the M0 and the town of Gödöllő is planned to be opened two years from now.
On September 23, an 11.4-kilometer section of the M6 motorway between the M0 and the Érdi-tető will open, then on September 30, the northern section of M0 between Routes 2 and 11 and the Megyeri Bridge.
With the exception of the last, completion of these projects are late by one or two years.
