New road tax planned for next year
The Economy Ministry is considering introducing a road tax for lorries of more than 7.5 tonnes from next year.
The government's main goal with the plan is to divert traffic from main roads to motorways to ease congestion, rather than creating extra revenues for the budget.
The major precondition for launching the road tax would be the creation of a tollgate system, but this has suffered setbacks and will not be established before 2008. Economy Minister János Kóka is expected to name László Kovács as the ministerial commissioner to lead the project.
