New petition against Szabadság tér Soviet memorial
The World Federation of Hungarians and Deport '56 have begun to collect signatures in a drive to get Parliament to call a referendum on removing the Soviet memorial from Szabadság tér in Budapest's District V.
The memorial, which was seriously damaged during the September 18 riot outside the State Television (MTV) headquarters, honors Soviet soldiers who died in the 1944-45 siege of Budapest.
