New home for Asian animals opens at Budapest zoo
Numerous species indigenous to Southeast Asia and the Indonesian archipelago have a new address in Budapest as of today, with the official re-opening of a 50-year-old structure at the Budapest Zoo.
The new "animal house" is named after the Hungarian explorer Jánus Xantus, and sits near the zoo's popular polar bear enclosure. It was originally built in 1952 and used as a winter refuge for birds. The new attraction will feature monkeys, giant pigeons, and other mammals, birds and reptiles.
The opening ceremony will be attended by Indonesian Ambassador to Hungary Mangasi Sihombing, Budapest Mayor Gábor Demszky and Environment Minister Miklós Persányi, who is currently acting as director of the zoo.
