New highway cameras to mean more fines for foreigners
The Hungarian police recently installed a new, more effective speed camera system along the M1 highway which will allow the authorities to fine foreigners on the spot, reports havariapress.hu.
According to the portal, the police "secretly" replaced all the four speed cameras on the M1 motorway, which runs from Budapest to the Austrian border.
Unlike the cameras they replaced, the new ones do not store images of speeding cars, but send them instantly to a remote central database. The system then tracks the cars, allowing the police to nab the driver when they leave the highway.
With this new technology, foreign drivers can be fined on the spot, rather than being sent summonses by post.
Meanwhile, there is a move to change Hungary's traffic laws so that foreigners can be taken into custody or have their vehicle seized until they pay the penalty.
