New director appointed for Hungarian National Theatre
Education and Culture Minister István Hiller on Thursday appointed actor and director Róbert Alföldi as National Theatre director from July 1, 2008 to July 31, 2013. From January Alföldi will work alongside the incumbent Tamás Jordán, who will leave his post in July.
Alföldi's application, made available on the National Theatre website, reveals that he envisages a smaller troupe with more guest actors, and intends to put on theatre classics in addition to numerous contemporary dramas. He is also preparing to host an international theatre festival and will welcome Hungarian productions from over the border.
