Hungary's first automated parking garage to use robot technology has opened on Budapest's Akácfa utca (District VII), writes autoblog.hu, based on an MTI report. The new garage can accommodate twice as many cars as regular garages.

The garage is different from other automated garages in that here the cars are moved by robots, while in others the trays are replaced on which cars are parked. The system used at the new garage is unmanned, controlled distantly and takes 60 to 90 seconds to carry cars to a parking place or retrieve them, a time much shorter than at other similar garages. The first similar parking garage was opened in New York City last year, according to popularmechanics.com.

The area of the building is 721 square meters where 140 cars could park the traditional way, however, using robot technology, it can accommodate 340 cars.

The total value of the investment was Ft 2.5 billion (over €10.7 million), said Attila Csuhay, owner of GPM Kft, the company which manages the real estate investments of investor VIT Nyugdíjpénztár (Pension Fund).

Recently, an automated garage opened on Reáltanoda utca (District V). Budapest's first automated garage was opened in April 2003 on Váci utca, also in District V.
