New airport at lake Balaton to become 24hr border post
The airport in Sármellék at the southwest end of Lake Balaton can now receive flights any time of the day, as a government decree has granted the airport a licence to operate around the clock. Legal obstacles to the operation of a 24-hour permanent border crossing and customs service have been cleared.
Sármellék airport has received Ft 415 million in state aid, and its operators have invested Ft 2.5 billion since 2004. Passenger traffic is expected to rise to 70,000 this year, from 26,000 in 2005.
