Geese suspected to be carrying avian flu virus were found at a farm in Ördöngős (Csongrád County) on Friday, and 9,400 animals were ordered to be culled on Saturday, the ministry of agriculture (FVM) announced today.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, some of the geese showed symptoms of nervous system disorders, which gave a reason to suspect bird flu infection. Another cause of the symptoms may have been a bacterial infection, but a veterinary examination could not prove this on Saturday. Samples taken from the animals are currently being examined.

Twenty-nine other farms are within three kilometers of Ördöngős (four within one kilometer) where 535 birds are kept. They were examined and found to be healthy.

Geese infected with the virus were found in Csongrád County for the first time after half a year last week, as a result of which several countries banned poultry imports from Hungary. The British-based reference laboratory of the European Union confirmed today that the animals were infected with the H5N1 virus, which is potentially dangerous to humans.
