National traffic authority to install comprehensive road camera system
Hungary's National Traffic Authority (NKH) is planning to install a new camera surveillance system on the country's public roads, to better deal with drivers in violation of traffic regulations, reports Népszabadság. But while the necessary funds are available, the government has yet to make a decision on the Ft 17 billion (nearly €70.5 million) project.
On January 1, 2009, the NKH will take over the task of checking motorway fee payment from the National Motorway Manager (ÁAK), based on an amendment to the law on public road traffic made last year.
The planned camera system - called KKEER - would start operating in 2010.
The NKH's takeover of the ÁAK's role would have a notable impact in other areas as well.
As the NKH maintains close relationships with foreign traffic authorities, drivers from other countries are less likely to avoid paying fines if they are sanctioned in Hungary.
It would also become more difficult for truck drivers from other countries to drive in Hungary without paying motorway fees, as the NKH would receive pictures taken by cameras installed at border crossing stations before the vehicle could leave the country.
The proposed new system would also be capable of cross-checking the validity of a driver's other documents based on the license plate number, such as driver' licenses, vehicle inspection records, and insurance cards.
The government will have to make a decision before the system can be built. The costs are currently estimated at Ft 17 billion, which is covered by the balance reserves of this year's budget.
