More charges filed over violence at Budapest Gay Pride March
Budapest Police filed a report with the Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday regarding violence against police stemming from attacks on the gay parade in Budapest last Saturday.
Proceedings have been launched against 29 other people on misdemeanour charges, three others are charged with endangering public security and six others with resisting official measures.
The Civil Liberties Union has objected to Tuesday’s court ruling that throwing eggs is protected by the right of free expression, and will initiate three more criminal proceedings.
In another development, several members of Védegylet have quit after the environmental group issued a statement of solidarity with those taking part in the gay parade. Academy of Sciences member Gábor Vida said Wednesday that he had quit because no consultations had preceded the press release, adding that he disagrees with the gay parade and condemns homosexuality. “I find it disgusting,” he told Kossuth Rádió.
Védegylet spokesman Zsolt Boda said the statement is consistent with the group’s principles.
