A 68-year-old man from Újkigyós, Békés county, lived as a slave in a stable after his daughter sold him to a Roma family.

The family made him work without paying him and gave him a meal only once a day. He was rescued by the local authority.

Mayor Zoltán Szebellédi told Népszabadság that three or four Roma families are practising slavery in the town and have threatened his staff.
