Main square in Pécs to get "mediterranean" makeover

The government of Pécs recently accepted a plan to rebuild the city's main square in "mediterranean" style by 2010, the year when Pécs is set to be Cultural Capital of Europe, reports napi.hu.

Parking lots on Széchenyi tér will be replaced by decorative fountains and statues, and streets leading to the square will be renewed as well. Traffic on the square will be limited, for example, public transport buses will be allowed to use one lane only.

Green areas will be increased by nearly 40%. However, the flower beds around the Zsolnay Fountain will be removed, so that it can really be used for drinking.

The area around the wedding hall will be completely rebuilt, and the road cover on Szepessy Ignác utca will fit that of the main square. The side of the square where Nádor Hotel stands will be changed so that terraces can be built there. The square will become wider at the church to allow space for more green areas.

The whole project is expected to cost nearly Ft 500 million (over €2 million).
