Main opposition party gains popularity
According to a recent poll conducted by Magyar Gallup Intézet, main opposition party Fidesz increased its advantage ahead of the governing Socialist party (MSZP) in November. On the second week of the month, 33% of respondents said they would vote for Fidesz, while 22% answered they would support the MSZP, writes radio.hu.
The difference between the two parties was 9% in October. Smaller opposition party MDF is currently supported by 4% and smaller governing party SZDSZ by 2% of voters.
The work of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány is evaluated as somewhat better; 30% of respondents said he was performing his tasks well. Around 60% have a negative opinion on his work; this number hasn't changed much since August. Gallup asked 1,020 randomly selected adult Hungarian citizens.
Meanwhile, according to pollster Szonda Ipsos, the popularity of President László Sólyom is continuously decreasing. He is the second most popular Hungarian politician behind Parliamentary Speaker Katalin Szili.
Opposition leader Viktor Orbán is still more popular than Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, but his advantage has decreased in recent months.
