Long distance buses to replace trains on 500 kilometers
Hungarian state railway company MÁV will stop transporting passengers on a total of 500 kilometers of 14 routes starting on March 3, based on a recent government decision, writes napi.hu.
Most of the towns impacted by the decision will be served in the future by long-distance buses. Both bus operator Volán Egyesülés and the ministry of economy believe that passengers will receive better servicesas a result of the change, because the buses will have more stops inside the towns. Tickets for the buses, however, will be more expensive than those for trains.
Three routes that are currently served by MÁV's train replacement buses - Pincehely-Tamási, Lepsény-Dombóvár and Tamási-Fürged - will have to wait for Volán buses until April 1.
Tracks will not be removed on any of the discontinued passenger routes, because they will be used by freight trains, said MÁV Assistant CEO László Mosóczi.
Ft 2 billion (roughly €8 million) is expected to be saved by replacing trains with buses on these 14 routes.
