Locals protest for power plant in Hungarian wine region
Some 300 people demonstrated just outside Szerencs in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county in favour of construction of a straw-fuelled power plant on Friday. The closure of the local sugar refinery will cost some 300 jobs, but the new power plant to be built by BHD Hőerőmű and related companies could create 300 jobs, organiser Zoltán Takács said.
Opponents of the power plant have changed their mind and favour a smaller capacity power plant, said Szerencs mayor Mrs. Endre Rózsavölgyi.
Local wine maker associations said they support job creation, but all development projects should take into account the World Heritage status of the historic Tokaj wine region.
