Kossuth tér demonstrators sue Hungarian police
More than 200 people have sued the police at the Municipal Court, claiming that their protest at Kossuth tér was dissolved unlawfully on October 23. Police removed the demonstrators one day before a ceremony featuring numerous visiting politicians was due to take place to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Uprising.
László Grespik, representing the plaintiffs, argued that the axes and objects seized by the police are ordinary tools which are not sufficient cause for removing those who were "camping" in the square. He charged that the dispersal of the crowd near Astoria on October 23 was also unlawful.
Police insist that their act was lawful as the tools found in the square showed that the demonstration had lost its peaceful nature.
