Indefinite railway strike begins in Hungary
An unannounced, nation-wide railway strike of unspecified length organized by the Free Trade Union of Railway Workers (VDSZSZ) started in Hungary at 3 a.m. Friday, reports fn.hu. Employees are protesting against what they see are unfairly low wages since companies from state railway company MÁV were outsourced.
Budapest's three main railway stations, Keleti (Eastern), Déli (Southern) and Nyugati (Western) cannot serve trains, because most ticket and train inspectors and traffic controllers are on strike. Trains arrive at and leave from stations located on the outskirts of the city, such as Kelenföld, Angyalföld, Rákos and Rákospalota-Újpest.
Organizers evaluated the first few hours of the strike as successful, reports MTI, while no agreement was reached at a meeting between MÁV and VDSZSZ officials held Friday morning. The strike will continue indefinitely.
