Increase in taxi fares rejected by city hall
The Budapest Mayor's Cabinet did not back a proposed increase in taxi fares by 20% at its last meeting on September 16, writes Magyar Nemzet, based on an MTI report. Taxi organizations proposed fare hikes a few months ago.
City Hall Spokesman Krisztián Nyáry said leadership of the city does not recommend the Budapest Assembly allows the maximum fare to be raised, but requested that the economy committee of the local government starts negotiations with taxi organizations about a smaller hike of the Ft 300 base fare.
The proposal said that the base fare should be raised by 66%, and the variable fare by less than 10%. Leaders of the city thought raising the base fare from Ft 300 to Ft 500 would be too much.
Meanwhile, the competition office said that fare hikes in themselves would not solve anomalies in the market, but preferred to conserve the imbalance of demand and supply.
