Hungary's tax office investigates 180,000 gas subsidy claims
The Hungarian State Treasury (Magyar Államkincstár) has found that as many as 180,000 submitted requests for energy subsidies may not be justified. Some consumers who applied for a discount without good reason will be investigated by national tax office APEH.
Government subsidies for energy costs can be requested only if the family's income does not exceed Ft 93,905 (€378) per family member in the three months prior to submitting the request, writes hirtv.hu. This figure is calculated as three times times the minimum pension. Many families have submitted applications that have included additional low-income family members to reduce their average income.
