A torch-lit, human "peace chain" will extend between the Chain Bridge and Margit Bridge next Wednesday in protest of exclusion and hatred, reports hirszerzo.hu.

The silent protest along the Danube is being organized by Hungary's Socialist Party. The chain will form at 7 p.m. and is in remembrance of the victims of the Arrow Cross, which ruled Hungary in the final months before the Soviet occupation of the country in World War II.

The party considers May 9 as the Day of Victory, the 50th birthday of the European Union, according to the party's official website.

The party and its supporters are also staging a silent protest against the current "political siege" in Hungary at Buda's Gesztenyés-kert (Chestnut Garden) on Tuesday, May 8. The garden is located in the park bordered by Alkotás út, Jagelló út and Csörsz utca.

Gábor Simon (MSZP) said both protests aim to express the opinion of the peaceful majority.

Philosopher Miklós Gáspár Tamás said the Left can and should take to the streets. He added that he wasn't sure whether he'd be part of the peace chain because he had problems with the MSZP, as with all political forces.

Politologist Sándor Fekete believes the demonstrations will send the message that it is possible to express opinions in the street in a civilized manner, without raising fear.
