Hungary's population decline slows
The number of births has increased slightly, while the number of deaths has dropped considerably since last year, according to data provided by the Central Statistics Office (KSH), Magyar Nemzet writes. The number of marriages has fallen. The population is estimated at 10,070,000.
Preliminary data show that in the first six months of 2006, 48,149 babies were born, 66,411 residents died, and 17,742 marriages were registered. After decline in the first two months, the number of births increased again between March and June compared to last year. In total, 460 (1%) more babies were born than in the same period of last year.
Because there was no flu epidemic in the spring, the number of deaths dropped considerably, by 4,260 (6%), compared to the first half of 2005.
The number of new marriages decreased by 870,000 (4.7%) compared to the first six months of last year.
Due to the considerable decrease in the number of deaths, the population decline has slowed. In the first half of 2005, the population decreased by 22,978, while in the first half of this year, by 18,262.
