Hungary's population decline accelerates
The decline in Hungary's population has increased by 10% compared to a year ago, new data from the Central Statistics Office (KSH) indicate. In the first half of the year, the country's population decreased by 20,000, while in the same period of last year, it did by 18,000.
At the end of first half of 2007, the total population was 10,055,000.
While the ongoing drop in population is largely due to a declining birth-rate, and an increasing death-rate, migration has also cost the country an estimated 11,000 individuals.
Meanwhile, demography experts are said to be puzzled over the fact that the regions of the country where the demographic situation is best (Central Transdanubia) and worst (Western Transdanubia) are adjacent to each other.
