Hungary's justice ministry may abolish life sentences
The Justice Ministry intends to abolish lifetime imprisonment and review life sentences after 20 years, undersecretary Ferenc Kondorosi said Thursday. Kondorosi cited human rights considerations as an explanation.
Fidesz caucus director Róbert Répássy, head of the law section of his party, said the idea proves that Prime Minister Gyurcsány is not interested in the lives and security of Hungarians. The government is prepared to ease the punishment meted out to serial killers and child-murderers while it ignores the human rights of decent citizens who fear for their families.
