Hungary's Constitutional Court strikes down law on registered partnerships
The Constitutional Court on Monday struck down the Registered Life Partnership Act, effective December 15, after branding it unconstitutional. However the Court also ruled that registered life partnership of same-sex couples is not against the Constitution.
The court said it does not dispute the freedom to choose a partner, but must protect marriage as an institution to produce and raise a common child.
The gay community expressed outrage at the court ruling and will march to the Constitutional Court building at 6.30 p.m.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány asked Justice and Law Enforcement Minister Tibor Draskovics to draft a bill that will overcome the objections.
