Hungary's busiest countryside airport to close for winter
FlyBalaton airport - also known as Sarmellek airport - will halt passenger operations this winter after Ryanair suspended its regular passenger flights out of the airport, an official said on Monday.
The decision reflects low occupancy rates and high fuel prices, as well as the effects of the global financial crisis, which has forced the company to suspend more than 100 flights internationally, said the airport's sales and marketing manager Lajos Palko.
Ryanair has been operating flights to Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and London from FlyBalaton airport. The flights will be restarted from March 29 as part of the summer timetable.
This winter will be the first that FlyBalaton, owned by Irish and Hungarian investors since 2004, will stop regular flights, and 60-70 percent of airport staff will take unpaid leave.
