Hungary's biggest highrise goes green
Hungary's largest residential building, the "village house" located in Budapest's District III, has been completely renewed to save money for tenants and help the fight against global warming, writes index.hu. The building complex comprises 884 apartments in which 3,000 people live - the population of an average Hungarian village.
The outside of Hungary's largest residentail building has been repainted to bring attention to its new energy-saving features.
The renewal of the building included installing solar collectors on the roof, replacing windows and improving insulation of walls. It is expected that energy use of the building will be reduced by 50%.
The developments cost Ft 1.2 billion (€4.345 million) of which 40% was covered by the local government and the Europen Union, 33% by the state and 27% by residents.
The building was completed in 1970 and as a result of the developments, its expected life span grew to 150 years.
