Hungarian troops will take over air control at Kabul international airport for six months from October 2008, and special forces will take part in NATO operations in Afghanistan without national restrictions, also from that date, Defence Minister Imre Szekeres announced at a USAID seminar in Parliament on Tuesday. Participants in the conference discussed the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan.

Szekeres said 12-14 elite Hungarian commandoes could be deployed in areas to be determined by the NATO-led international ISAF force. He acknowledged that they could clash with Taliban soldiers.

US ambassador April M. Foley said Hungary has understood the lesson that the struggle against terrorism must assume global proportions.
