Hungary to return artworks to Greece
Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz announced in Athens on Thursday that Hungary will return to Greece 22 Classical art treasures stolen from Greece which were on display for years at the Museum of Fine Arts.
The museum bought the 22 items for Ft 700,000 in 1992 from a Hungarian who claimed that they were part of his family's collection.
A scientific test of the objects aroused suspicions that at least some of them may have been illegally taken from Greece and that three of them had come from excavations at Argos. Göncz announced that Hungary will return to Greece those objects whose origin is certain and will send full documentation on the others.
