Hungary provides refuge to 29 Cuban nationals
Budapest will provide refuge to 29 Cuban nationals living on the US base in Guantanamo. A deal was apparently struck at Hungarian-US talks, although no official announcement has yet been made. The Cubans are not connected to prisoners held at Guantanamo detention camp.
Foreign Ministry state secretary Márta Fekszi Horváth told MTI that "a ministry delegation travelled to Guantanamo where the Cubans were briefed on Hungary and filled in questionnaires that were processed in Hungary. Based on that, a decision was made to provide political refugee status to 29 of them," she explained, adding that the US will pay all the costs of adjustment for a year.
