Hungary, Croatia to build new river crossing
Hungary and Croatia plan to build a new border bridge for road traffic over the Mura river in the coming years, Lajos Pavlicz, Mayor of Murakeresztur (SW Hungary), told MTI on Thursday.
The 170-metre bridge will connect Murakeresztur and the Croatian locality of Kotoriba, creating a new link for Hungary's Croatian minority and Croatia's Hungarian minority.
The two localities divided by two kilometres have been connected by a railway bridge for several decades but drivers must make a 50-kilometre detour.
The project is in the phase of licensing. Construction is expected to start in 2011 or 2012 and estimated to cost 8 million euros, partly covered from EU support.
Border and customs control facilities are not planned to be built at the new crossing as by that time Croatia is expected to have made big advances in European integration.
