Hungarians claiming disability to retire early
Hungary has the highest proportion of people receiving disabled pensions in the world, radio.hu reports. One of the reasons behind this could be that the age limit of retirement has been raised, and unemployment rates have increased, so claiming to have a physical disability is an easy way to retire early.
The current workforce in Hungary numbers 3,871,000. There are 3,556,000 pensioners. Every year, the workforce decreases by 37,400, and so do the contributions to the national pension fund. If things don't change, by 2013, the fund will no longer be able to guarantee even a bare minimum monthly pension.
The laws governing pensions was changed in 1997 when the age limit of retirement was raised, and private pension funds were introduced.
