A Roma family beat the driver and the passenger of a car in Nyírkáta, Szabolcs County, on Tuesday after the vehicle struck a three-year-old girl who had run out in front of it. The attack was reminiscent of the "lynching" case in Olaszliszka, where teacher Lajos Szögi was beaten to death after his car ran into a local girl.

Some 30 relatives of the child attacked the driver and passenger, hitting them several times and smashing the windscreen of the car.

The girl was taken to Mátészalka hospital with concussion and later taken to the intensive ward of the Jósa András Hospital in Nyíregyháza.

The driver, who was saved by the arriving ambulance crew, sustained only light injuries, but was driven to Mátészalka hospital. The passenger was given treatment on the spot.

Mátészalka police initiated proceedings against two women and one man for disorderly behaviour committed in a group, attempting to commit grievous bodily harm and destruction.
