Kaposvár enacts sweeping ban on smoking in public
Beginning yesterday, smoking is forbidden in the center of Kaposvár and in the vicinity of certain public facilities in the southwestern town, writes portal origo.hu.
The new regulation, which was passed by the town's general assembly in February, includes provisions for special smoking zones, which are marked with signs and provided with ashtrays.
Besides the town center, smoking has been banned from areas surrounding playgrounds, educational, cultural, healthcare, social, child protection and child welfare institutes, churches and other public buildings, parking lots and cemeteries.
In such areas, smoking is allowed only in designated smoking zones. Those who smoke anywhere else can receive a fine of between Ft 3,000 and Ft 10,000 (€12 and €40).
The town assembly adopted the ban in an effort to protect non-smokers from second-hand smoke, and to keep the town tidier. For the latter reason, a similar proposal was made to "ban" pigeons from the town, but it was not adopted.
